Kamal Kumaar Rao is an award-winning street photographer and art director known for his refined visual sensibility and deep understanding of storytelling through light, form and composition. Working between London, Mumbai and Delhi, his practice moves fluidly across photography, design and art direction, guided by clarity, discipline and emotional intelligence.

His work and creative practice have been featured in international publications including Forbes, The Telegraph, Time Out, Amateur Photographer, PetaPixel, Colossal, Digital Camera World, DPReview, My Modern Met and Mid-Day.

What makes his work distinctive is the originality of its visual language and his relationship with light. He does not simply photograph what he sees; he photographs the moment it emerges from darkness. A single eye, a silhouette or a quiet gesture can be enough to evoke an entire world. His photographs exist on the threshold between the seen and the unseen, where absence becomes as powerful as presence.

His experience extends to international photography judging. Kamal serves on the Photography Jury of the ADC 105th Annual Awards at The One Club for Creativity, bringing his perspective to one of the world’s longest-running and most respected global awards for art direction, design and creative excellence.

Kamal is also the Founder and Art Director of Pure Street Photography® (PSP) and Pure Photography Awards (PPA), independent international photography platforms dedicated to celebrating exceptional photography through awards, physical exhibitions, grants, memberships and curatorial initiatives.Founded in 2020, PSP has since grown alongside PPA into international platforms reaching photographers across more than 50 countries celebrating photography across street photography, portrait photography, minimalist photography, comedy photography & dog and cat photography.

In January 2026, the Pure Street Photography Awards Exhibition, India’s first and largest contemporary street photography exhibition, presented at Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai, featured 147 photographs from 33 countries. The Awards were judged by David Campany, Curator and Creative Director at the International Center of Photography (ICP), New York. The six-day exhibition welcomed more than 25,000 visitors, marking a significant moment for the celebration of street photography in India.

The following edition expanded further.
